One of the best parts about a private jet charter is the no-hassle convenience of bringing your pet along for the journey. Pets are welcome on private flights, and it’s usually a much calmer, more enjoyable experience for both of you compared to flying commercial.
However, even if you have the entire plane to yourself, there are a few general guidelines and safety rules you’ll need to follow. Doing so can keep your pet happy throughout the trip and make flying with your furry friends a breeze.
Consider the following planning and safety tips when bringing your pet on your upcoming flight:
1. Talk with your pet’s vet before the trip.
Your pet doesn’t need a full check up prior to take off, but it’s a good idea to talk with your vet about how to handle your pet for their first flight experience. Your vet may be able to recommend tips on keeping your pet safe and happy while in the air, as well as make sure your pet is in good enough health to fly.
Your vet will also be able to provide you with the appropriate documentation your pet will need, including a health certificate.
2. Get your pet’s passport and vaccine records.
Some countries will require your pet to have a passport. You will need to do your homework on your destination to figure out if your pet will be required to have one. Make sure you keep it handy so that you can present it when asked for it.
3. Check for breed restrictions.
Depending on where you’re traveling, there might be specific breeds that aren’t welcome on your aircraft or at your destination. Check ahead of time with your private jet charter broker to learn if breed restrictions might apply to your trip.
4. Work with your private jet broker for the best accommodations.
Your private jet charter broker is a wealth of resources when it comes to accommodating your travel party. Let us know ahead of time that you’re planning on bringing your pet on board so we can include their comfort in our travel planning.
5. Acclimate your pet to its carrier, if applicable.
If you plan on using a pet carrier, it’s a good idea to acclimate them to it early. Leave the carrier open on the floor of your home several days prior to take off. This way, they can sniff it out and hopefully not be as stressed when you put them in it the day of your flight. You might even let your pet take it for a test drive prior to the flight, including eating their meals inside the carrier and even sleeping in it.
This will also give you an idea as to whether you have the right size carrier or might need to upgrade. Using a carrier that’s too small for your pet is never a good idea, as this can often stress them out and make for a miserable flight experience.
6. Pack plenty of toys and treats.
Your pet might get bored or restless during the flight, so keep them entertained with their favorite toys and treats. It might be exactly what your pet needs to calm their anxiety about flying.
7. Plan for pet bathroom breaks and meals.
Ideally, your pet will eat and use the bathroom prior to takeoff, but depending on the length of your flight, that might not be enough to hold them over until you land. You should have a backup plan in case your pet gets hungry or needs to answer the call of nature during the flight.
In your pet’s carry on bag, it’s a good idea to pack food and water bowls, along with pet food and treats for a mid-flight meal. You might also want to bring along some puppy pads or potty mats for your pet, or at the very least, some trash bags or paper towels to handle accidents.
8. Use sedatives sparingly.
Sedatives should be used as a last resort when your pets are flying. Even though they may be nervous about the loud engines or unfamiliar environment, it’s important to avoid sedatives as much as possible and only under the direction of your veterinarian.
This is because the sedatives may affect your pet’s ability to control body heat at higher altitudes. In some cases, a sedative can make your pet feel worse when flying. If you think your pet won’t fare well on the flight, talk to your vet about using CBD oil to calm their anxiety.
